The COABE Journal is a peer-reviewed, practitioner-focused themed journal published semi-annually by the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE). The COABE Journal seeks contributions from Adult Education professionals to share best practices, research, innovations, reflections, and reviews. Currently, the journal is seeking submissions for the Spring 2023 edition which will focus on the impact of student leadership on program success and community vitality.
Student Leadership is critical to learner, program, and community success. When student leadership is a core value in adult education programs, students are engaged partners in defining the direction of their programs and their lives. Programs that intentionally provide opportunities for learners around community engagement, leadership, and advocacy are supporting the development of skills essential for success in the workplace and in life. As learners practice using their personal voice and skills to participate in democratic activities and civic conversations both in and out of the classroom, they transform their identities and embrace their role as engaged community members, involved parents, and empowered employees.
The “Programs Succeed When Learners Lead” edition seeks article submissions from around the country focusing on how adult education programs, classrooms, practitioners, and students have developed programming that nurtures learner leadership within the classroom, across the program, and throughout their communities. Submissions highlighting varied perspectives and programming types such as workforce, corrections, ESOL, etc., and those collaboratively authored with adult learners and alumni are encouraged.
