Teacher Tuesday with COABE’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year! Adjusting to Change as the New Normal

Consuelo Carrillo, winner of COABE’s 2021 national Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award is joined by an adult learner, Arnold Montiel from his program as well as COABE board member, Stephenie Rittberger to share about their experience over the past year and a half as they have dealt with the impact of COVID in the classroom.

Adult Education has gone through significant changes in the last year and a half. Programs have struggled with transitions to new teaching models, decreasing enrollment, and lower completion rates. For many programs this is the new normal.

COABE with the support of Essential Education will offer an ongoing series of field-based webinars that address the changes in adult education and how programs are successfully adapting to them. COABE is asking for your help with the webinar series. We will use several platforms.

Consuelo Carrillo, has a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems from the Instituto Tecnologico de Hermosillo. She is a former AmeriCorps member, and she volunteered for two years in the Family Literacy Program. She has been an ABE Instructor for the last 10 years and recently started as a Instructional Math coach, PLC Math facilitator and TEALS instructor. Consuelo was recently recognized on a national level as COABE’s 2021 Teacher of the Year.

Arnold Montiel, age 58, is a current adult learner at Pima Community College. After a family tragedy struck Arnold’s life when he was in the 10th grade, he had to drop out of high school. For years he worked in the construction trade where two work accidents took a toll on his back. He started to work for a print shop but still ended up needing double-back surgery. While laying in his hospital bed, he was concerned that he would not be able to return to his current profession, so he decided to try to obtain his GED. To date he only has two more tests to pass, Math and Science. Arnold has participated in the Adult Ed Inspirational Poster project. He willfully tells his story in order to inspire other adults who are returning to school and he will be part of the next local Ambassador Training. After obtaining his GED, he is planning to enroll at Pima within the Social Services field.

Stephenie Rittberger, adult education coordinator for the Career Learning Center of the Black Hills, has been with adult education as a division of Black Hills Special Services Cooperative for twenty years. Her experience in adult education has been a varied and enriching experience. Mrs. Rittberger began by teaching in two rural sites. She provided GED® preparatory coursework at STAR Academy, a juvenile correctional facility in Custer, and at the minimum security unit in Rapid City. She transitioned into the role of program coordinator six years ago. In 2008, she was the Adult Educator of the Year for the South Dakota Association of Adult and Life-long Learning. Mrs. Rittberger participated in the state development of an initiative to improve the delivery of reading instruction across South Dakota. She also assisted in the development and implementation of College and Career Readiness Standards for adult education programs at a state level. She recently worked on a project to improve and deliver more career pathways for students focusing on transition to post-secondary institutions or ensuring stackable credentials for students exiting programs. Stephenie led the work on the development and implementation of the Woksape project, which builds on previous work and incorporates a cultural component for Native American Learners. This project was a finalist in the Minds That Move Us Career Pathways Challenge and Festival. Read More.
